Turn your PC into a Mac
We've got a bonus how-to for you this week. After becoming obsessed with a story on Wired News from last month
about people getting their Windows PCs to have the same look and feel of Mac OS X, we convinced Aqua-Soft.org staff
member Kurt Williams to give us the lowdown on how we could do it ourselves:
So, you wanna make your ugly Windows XP interface look like Mac OS X, huh? It's really not all that difficult to do,
and with a little luck, you'll be able to convince all but the most die-hard Mac users that you run an Apple computer.
First, here's a list of the programs you'll need:
- StyleXP or WindowBlinds (skins the Graphical User Interface of your operating system)
- ObjectBar (the white Finder bar on the top of Macs; has File, Edit, View, etc. on it.)
- ObjectDock, YzDock (discontinued), or MobyDock (The dock on the bottom of a Mac that contains icons and shortcuts to programs)
- Trillian (chat program that can be skinned to resemble iChat)
- YzToolbar (skins the toolbar icons in your Windows windows)
- YzShadow (puts a lovely drop shadow under your windows á la Mac OS X)
- Rainlendar (popular skinable desktop calendar)
- Rainmeter (skinnable desktop system statistics)
- Samurize (like Konfabulator for the Mac; can display just about anything, such as clocks, uptime, and the weather)
- iTunes for Windows (self-explanatory)
- Icons (The pretty little pictures on your desktop that point you somewhere. There are millions out there, but try the link provided for over a 1,000 lifted from Mac OS X 10.3 aka Panther)
That's pretty much what you'll want for starters. You don't need all of these, and in fact, you really only need a few
to get a reasonably good looking OS X facsimile, but if you're gonna do this you might as well do it right. Now on to
the guide.
This guide assumes that you have either downloaded/purchased the programs listed and 0that you know your way around a
computer, at least to a reasonable extent.
1) I use StyleXP for my visual style, so that's what I'll detail here. WindowBlinds isn't that different, but if you
prefer it, be my guest. The first thing you'll need to do is download a skin. I recommend Kol's website,
StudioTwentyEight for some excellent skins, but feel free to look
around for any others that might interest you. Download your ZIP, and extract it to C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes. Open
up StyleXP and load up that baby. Your windows should now look like the skin you downloaded. If you chose Panther (an
excellent choice) then they should look somewhat like this:
2) Time to find a good ObjectBar skin. I'd suggest crni's website for some excellent themes. Download the one you like
best and extract it to your ObjectBar folder. Open the new folder in there (named something like the theme you
downloaded) and double-click the .OBTHEME icon. The top of your screen should now look something like this, depending
on your theme (Milk for me):
3) Next up is the dock. Open up whichever version you settled on downloading. This is pretty easy to set up.
Basically all you need to do is drag shortcuts or executables to the dock and ta da, you have a shortcut. To change
it's icon, right-click and select "change icon" or some variation. To get new icons to select, make sure you put them
in the icons subfolder (for YzDock) or the main dock folder (for ObjectDock). Easy as pie. When you have the icons and
programs you like, it should look something like this:
4) For those that don't know, Trillian is a
nifty chat program that sticks AIM, MSN, ICQ, and IRC into one program. If you don't use it, you should if for no other
reason that it can look a lot like iChat. You may or may not need the Pro version to get the skin to work. I've heard
mixed reports, but if it doesn't work right, I'd say you need the Pro version. An excellent choice for skins are
Danimator's iChat skins. Extract it to your Trillian skin
directory, open up Trillian's preferences, go to skins, and select the new skin you want to use. You can follow the
readme for some more precise directions to get it looking perfect. When you're done, it should look like this:
5) YzToolbar and YzShadow are pretty self-explanatory. Just install 'em and run 'em. You can find good YzToolbar skins
on the net: I'd recommend Aqua-Soft or AquaXP. Depending on skin (Milk, for me) and settings, it should look something
like this:
6) Rainlendar and Rainmeter are also pretty easy to install and set-up. Just run the installer, and find a good skin.
Again, there's many to choose from. I'd suggest searching the forums at the aforementioned Aqua-Soft and AquaXP. Here's
the Rainlender skin I use.
7) Samurize is a bit complicated, so if you're going to try
and use it, be forewarned that it can be a very big hassle, if it works at all. I'm not even going to try and explain
it in this brief overview, but if you are serious about it, check out the Samurize forums at
Aqua-Soft and AquaXP. Here's an example of
what it can do:
8) If you listen to music on your computer, no Aqua-fication can be complete without the authentic iTunes for Windows.
Apple provides plenty of documentation on how to install and use it, so I'll leave that part to them. If you want to
make it look more like iTunes for Macintosh, check out
localhost's multi-plugin.
And the final result:
So that's pretty much all there is to it. Good luck!
Kurt Williams

Macs are good in their way
while windows is good in its own way....

This mod is actually worth it if you don't have a Mac and can't afford it (or something like that) and you like how Mac looks. Macs are only really good for photo and video editing. PCs are good for a little of both and gaming. Me and my brother have these mods and it actually INCREASED the performance of our PCs. So we both think it's worth it. Plus if you have different users on your PC it hardly effects them. They only get Mac icons and when they go to shut down its Mac styled. So if you want a gaming PC but like how a Mac looks I suggest you take the time to get this mod. But if you want photo or video editing. I say work your a** off and spend the money to get a G5 or Mac mini or something Mac.

I have downloaded Object bar "panther.zip" file. Now the problem is where should I extract those files. Kurt you said it to extract it to Object Bar Folder, but tell me where is it located?, please
Eric @ Dec 19th 2005 12:03AM
1. I've downloaded the object bar file 'panther.zip'. Where should I extract it? I didn't find any folder named 'ObjectBar'.
2. Also I've downloaded the Yz Shadow but I don't find any shadows under the letters. I can see shadow under windows that are opened.
3. Can I get skins for Dock? If so pls send me the site add.

"win users generally like the interface of mac but not all the features, and are willing to lower performence to a mac standard to get it!!! (had to say that) all operating systems are as shit as each other, mac osx is as stable as windows me, and thats sad, windows is just famous for its errors, mac is not, although mac can be a pain in the backside sometimes.
now will all u little insecure mac people just shut up because the macs are slow poor performers for gaming and most other tasks."
DUDE! Most of M$ofts "innovations" are borrowed from Apple's innovations. You say there aren't that many people writing apps for Mac OS X?? THERE ARE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF APPS AND HUNDREDS OF DEVELOPERS FOR MAC INCLUDING M$!! You say that Apple's hardware are slow performers? The G5 was THE 1st 64-bit Desktop on the market AND TIGER is the First 64-bit OS!! These machines are fast!! Check out the Benchmarks comparing a modern Apple to a modern PC! Now that Apple is switching to Intel, they will be easier to compare, but Apple's have always been at the forefront of everything computing. M$ Copies Apple! XP Came out AFTER OSX and looked a whole lot like it.
You say that Apple's can jam games, but you are DEAD WRONG! I have all the latest greatest titles running on OS X! I have Doom 3, Unreal Tourny 04, etc. etc. etc. and they all look superior to PC's becuase my Hardware kicks ass! I have a gorgeous Apple cinema display that is just beautiful. I have an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO 256Mb Video Card in my PowerMac G5 (Dual 2.0Ghz) that in combination with my monitor, spanks the competition in pixel-pipeline and rendering. So don't call Apple's Harware/Software inferior. It just isn't. PC's are good, too. But I prefer Mac becuase I want to USE my computer, not worry about it all the time.
I have been running Apple's systems for 8 years. I have gone from System 7 to 8 to OS 9, to Mac OS X and every version in between. In ALL that time, I have NEVER NEVER encountered a single virus, spyware, adware, or any of the other complaints that Windoze users have on a daily basis.
I understand if you don't like Mac users Snobbery, I don't either - but you must admit that Apple has always made a superior system. Simple as that. M$ has a harder task to accomplish w/universal compatibilty and legacy support, though. I wouldn't expect Windows to be better than OS X, simply because of what it is.
So there you have it. A dedicated Mac user's take on this whole Skinning thing - you like the way it looks? that's because it looks good. You like the way OS X functions? Well, then buy a Mac w/OS X installed and enjoy!
You like the way Windows functions but also like the way OS X looks? No problem! Microsoft will be copying many of OS X's features and themes (as they always do) in the next version of their OS. So you'll get more of what you like!
Everybody keep on computing! M$, Apple, Linux, etc! Moore's Law is In Effect!
peace,
lushbudget

The calendar, clock, iTunes remote and weather is the widget from Konfabulator 2.0.0 (the current version of Konfabulator, 2.1.1 is now free.) Also, I'm also wondering about the ObjectBar skin, I mean its very beautiful and I am asking why there is no given name for that skin. If you use WindowBlinds, you can disregard the use of Y'z Toolbar and I recommend this a lot for it will not just let you use right-handed buttons but also the left-handed ones. I also recommend using instead WindowFX which offers a perfect match for OS X shadows and animations that resembles the real OS X. If you will use Y'z Shadow, you will notice that your system's performance had dropped. The big icons on the desktop might be AveDesk which can be downloadable at Aqua-Soft and is donationware. The dock might be MobyDock with OS X skin installed which you can find here: http://www.aqua-soft.org/board/archive/index.php?f-13.html.
The rainmeter skin used here is Lab 3. I am still looking for the uptime program. I will return here if I found it.

Re: Win VS Mac
Macs aren't used for gaming (in most cases). Macs are built for business and design. Macs are designed for people who KNOW HOW TO USE COMPUTERS. They are best for design work and stuff of that nature.

The hell are you talking about?
Apple invented the GUI? Gimme a fuggin' break. Xerox PARC OS? SRI On-Line System (incorporated the first mouse, not Apple, I might add)?
Apple invented the OS? The hell do you call IBM's OS/360? The hell do you call Unix?
Apple invented the mouse? Uhh... no... that will forever belong to Douglas Engelbart of Stanford Research Institute, for use with the On-Line System and Xerox PARC, years before Mac's own GUI'd LISA OS came into existence.
Oh look... they're still "innovating" today!
Tiger JUST introduced Mac Burnable CD folders. (been around since 2000)
Tiger JUST introduced RSS feeds. (been around since '98)
Tiger JUST introduced widgets (useless, but we had Konfabulator anyways)
Tiger JUST introduced Safari parental controls. (Uh... AOL 1.0 anyone?)
Tiger JUST introduced Quicktime Fullscreen controls... (WMP 7?)
MACS ARE SWITCHING TO INTEL, you morons. It took a PC company to put Macs in competition with PC, forget it, you already lost.

platform 'warrior' zealots have one thing in common- they are bone stupid. But I do have to note that lately, the dumbest and most insecure come from the Mac side of the asile. Everytime a subject like themeing an OS comes up, all the bone-stupid Mac zealots crawl out of the woodwork and demonstrate their ignorance of most all things computer related beyond the shallow surface.
There was a time when Mac users were actually known for being professionals, and very knowlegeable. No one bought a PowerMac 9600 to be 'chic' or 'cool' or to look at the "pwetty OS colors ooohhh!"
But ever since the candy-coated iMac days and the 'circus is in town' bondi-blue era, more and more utter retards have navigated to the Mac platform, replacing the old school pros with idiots who just babble on endlessly about how the OS 'looks' even though few of them ever DO A FRIGGEN THING WITH IT. Fact is, a whole bunch of non-talented people bought into the notion that just buying a 'fashion statement' Mac made them some kind of elite to snide down their non-skilled noses at everyone else.
People wish to theme their OS in all sorts of ways, not just to look like OSX, though that is one of them. Get over it.
Meanwhile, to the Mac user zealot 'computer fashion club': please crawl back under your rock and admire the "pwetty colors oohhh!" of your Mac in the backwater of computers-as-fashion-statement that your types occupy, even though you're amoung the very LEAST talented of computer USERS.
Benzoic Acid @ Dec 19th 2005 12:03AM
You guys, both groups, are really too biased on everything! First off, I use to think windows was far superior to mac. However, I bought a apple powerbook last week and I must say, I'm extremely impressed! The mac OS does run quicker and opens applications up faster than windows does. For example, I can keep the OS all day and it will still run as quick as when it was first turned on for the day. Searching for files takes seconds, literally. I'm just using a few aspects as examples, there's many more.
To the person who said the widgets were useless, I think their pretty neat, of course I would not buy a mac just for widgets, that would be dumb, however, the apple OS has a host of cool things like the widgets. One widget I downloaded is a very compact square, which allows me to look at all the gas prices in a selected radius near my home in seconds. Like I said, the apple has a lot of these little features and when added up they add a lot to the favor of OS X.
And I know i'm going to be mocked for saying this, but it does look better than windows. So overall for everything but gaming Apple beats out windows. An apple cannot outperform pc's is gaming, besides, most games are made for windows anyway. But for everything else the OS X is more stable than windows. However, the way some of you mac users carry on about how much windows crashes and how much more stable apple's are is ridiculous. The difference in stability is not as big as you claim, but there is a difference. I have yet to see a windows laptop that functions so flawlessly, if your're in the market for a laptop, get an apple! Laptops arn't used for gaming!
You guys should look at both ends of the table and stop being so biased, it doesn't help your arguments at all.
Gaming: windows>apple
Everything else: apple>windows
Pikl @ Dec 19th 2005 12:03AM
Anyone who believes any word that you just said is a moron... but that's okay... they'll go out and purchase a computer to suit them juuuuust fine.
Stability -- You're simply an idiot if you cannot get Windows to run straight... it's not even close to difficult to get Windows to run stably, and then a little more in-depth computer know-how can let you run your computer for YEARS without formatting... just like a Mac.
The difference is, the Windows box will actually have some use in four years. Macs don't have much use right now, any "performance" they so claim to have is perfectly dismal. A single AMD Athlon64 3200+ outruns dual G5's at 2.5 GHz when booting OS X. Developers running Mac OSX x86 edition have been quoted as saying that the new Intel machines are "blazing fast."
It took a PC/Windows/x86 company to pull your sorry "computers" out of their dismal state of disrepair. The arguement is closed -- Steve Jobs sided with PC's.

Windows XP is getting old. Luckly I didn't jump on the Windows XP bandwagon in late 2001, otherwise I would be really sick of it by now, and even it the 2 (or more?) or so years i've had Windows XP, i've gotten a bit sick of it. When Windows Vista comes out (late 2006), XP will almost be five years old! MS is lucky that Windows users follow them like sheep, because this could have been a big blow for the company. This tediously long time has already taken its toll with other OSes catching up to and surppassing Windows big time, convincing some to switch to other OSes.
Pikl @ Dec 19th 2005 12:03AM
I don't really have a problem with Macs. If someone wants to use a Mac, then, fine. That's just fine, some people are more comfortable with the platform.
I have a problem with the Mac user stating his Mac is better than my PC, and that I should abandon my "horrible" XP-powered system for a Tiger-powered one.
Thanks, I'm gonna keep going with Dell, Gateway or I'm gonna build all of my future x86 boxes. When Mac-ist ego drops, maybe I'll consider the computers. Until then, this means war.

If u dont like u windows. And mac still not relesed any os for PC platform.
1. Then go linux or fre bsd with KDE as your gui. (Not so fine but anyway freestuff taste nice)
2. Or kick your PC out and get you self a mac
(matter if u want to spend that amount of cash, for I don't think it's worth the money. To much $$ to little stuff for it. And when get for ex minimac, you are stuck with it and cant get the benefit like PC to change hardware and uppgrade hardware. You must buy you self a new one when they relese a better one)
Anyway I use linux and kicked Microsoft out.
And use a gui that looks like mac or if mac looks like linux. Btw u can chose between many gui in linux or free bsd. When taste freedom then you newer want to go back to microsoft's jail with warden Gates ;)
Btw mac think over that part if I get your stuff then I want to upgrade it time to time. I don't care about how great it looks. I care if I can upgrade it for reasonable amount of cash. I earn not so less money but still I cant afford your stuff cuse it's to expensive for me. I frequency upgrade my computers. And I run 3 of them. There is no chanse that I can use your stuff. Dosent matter if u have the greatest OS in the world.
Hope your new os for intel also works with AMD Athlon64 Venice 90nm 3200+ 2.0GHz to...If not then u still dont have made my day. Still Hate intel cpu.

Macs are so sweet. Have you ever tried to operate a PC while wearing an oven mitt? I'd like to see you try. I especially like how MACS have a "shaved" CDROM open/close button, making the box more aerodynamic. I was thinking about unbolting that plastic handle on the top front and installing an aluminum spoiler to make it look even faster and more Xtreme.
I think a lot of people hate on MACS because they are perceived as buggy. Something like 80% of MAC software, including the OS, is developed on PCs, so no wonder they don't work sometimes. Someone once told me that when OSX was developed it had to be built on a PC because MAC processors would crash while trying to compile the code. That doesn't really bother me because it still looks way sweeter than a PC. Another bonus is that virus developers tend to leave Apple alone since they are such a minority and have enough problem on their own. They probably can't figure out how to hack Apple's bomber software.
I have a mentally retarded brother that loves to use my MAC. I have seen him do things with that MAC that would never be possible for him on a PC, because of his condition. He seems to take right to it. He even figured out how to use iTunes without any help.
I program home pages for a living and my work makes me use a stupid PC. I tried to get a MAC but they said I couldn't plug it in to the network without a bunch of problems. They think I program on my PC, but I really take the work home and do it on my MAC because it is way cooler and faster. I would like to hook a water cooled system up to the processor so it will be even faster. And more Xtreme.
GOooooooooooo MACS!!

They think I program on my PC, but I really take the work home and do it on my MAC because it is way cooler and faster. I would like to hook a water cooled system up to the processor so it will be even faster. And more Xtreme.
GOooooooooooo MACS!!
