Unpacking the iPod Shuffle
So immediately after the keynote finished, fellow
Engadgeteer Lenn Pryor and I decided we had to have iPod
Shuffles RIGHT NOW! It just made sense for the kind of iPod users we are to snap them up. I have too much music on
my iPod (25 Gigs, actually) to pick what I want to play, but with so much music on there, shuffle never comes out quite
right. Plus the iPod is too big, and too susceptible to crashing from being shook up for my active lifestyle, and so I
mainly only use it only trips these days. I figured the Shuffle was the answer to all my prayers — and if it
wasn't the 99 bucks wouldn't kill me.
But getting one was like the tasks of Hercules. First we had to fight our way out of the Moscone Center since we
watched the keynote downstairs in the press room, we had to wait for the throngs to make the mad dash down to the show
floor before we could get up to the exit, and we were worried they would be sold out by the time we could make it up
the stairs and down the street. Then we had to persevere a long line out the door of the Apple Store and around the
corner. Our patience paid off the minute we hit the door, when the black clad employees were walking down the line with
crates full of the precious green boxes. We had nothing to worry about, Apple had planned for the high demand. Not that
therell be any left by tomorrow or anything, because while we just bought two each (one for ourselves, one for a
special someone), others were buying six to 10 of them obviously expecting to eBay them for fun and profit.
When we got to the register, our new main man Jesse hooked us up, and seconds later we were out the door, Shuffles in
hand.
We patiently kept our mitts off the box, biting our nails instead until we could get back to a good camera to bring
you these pictures.
Yes, you can turn the shuffle off with the flick of a switch if your playlist is in perfect order.
Some things never change, Apple still reminds us Dont steal music.
The new Autofill dialog. We love this feature.
Now that its all charged up and weve had a chance to use it, heres a few initial impressions:
-
We love Autofill. It makes the shuffle even more random since you never even know what will wind up on your Shuffle. Sure, you can narrow it down to music from a playlist, or do it all manually, but wheres the fun in that?
-
Were spoiled by Firewire. The USB 2.0 moved the songs onto the iPod Shuffle pretty quickly, but its not the song per second speed of the regular iPod over Firewire.
-
Apple claims 120 songs probably fit on the 512 MB version. We managed to fit 110, but we have lots of 160 and 192 kbps mp3 files.
-
This thing is tiny and light. Youll never feel it around your neck or in your pocket. Its like a stick of gum, not a pack. Just be sure not to leave it in your jeans when you wash them.
-
The controls take a second or two to get used to, then you never think about them again.
-
The sound is great. Its easily as loud and seems to be more clear with better bass response than our 3G iPod.

Something no one has mentioned is The Aireo. It is a a 1.5GB 802.11b (wifi, airport) portable MP3 player. This thing has the functionality of an ipod shuffle, airport express, and it comes with a screen, 500MB extra space over the 1GB model and sells on ebay for right around the $100 mark.
I have nothing against the limitations of the shuffle, and to me they arn't very big issues at all with such a low pricemark, but the extra features of the aireo make it a steal in my mind. If Apple makes a 2nd generation I hope they see fit to put in some sort of removeable media, be it Smart Media, XD, SD, or whatever. If I could upgrade it I would jump on the offer, but that isn't apple's way, since they will undoubtedly release another gen with higher space and they want you to buy a new product.
That goes back to the whole recycling issue, and is the reason why I run PC's. If I could upgrade the CPU and MOBO in say a G4 without any hassle I would be much more eager to buy one, but on my limited students budget I can't afford to go out and buy a whole new computer every 3 years. Instead I upgrade. I hope that the negative press around apple and recycling will encourage them to consider upgradability in the future, but major upgrades reduce the chance of the current user buying a whole new product which eats up apple's profits. I don't know if anyone feels the same way about apple and upgrades as I do, but once they jump on the bandwagon and I am out of uni I will be one of th first purchasers.
I am happy to see how well apple has been doing in the last few years and I hope that they continue to steal wintel market, but consider customer needs and the environment!

Does anybody know if it can be used as an usb drive without drivers in windows? And can you drag and drop the mp3 songs without having the software installed?

Ok guys, come on. All you can do is complain about the iPod shuffle. If you don't like it... don't buy it!!! I want one my self because I don't want to carry my whole music collection... only some of it for maybe a work out or something. Plus it is like a thumb drive, perfect for me in school (my school still wants to use floppy disks, screw that). Plus I can't believe some of you people hate mac. I mean come on windows sucks.. period! I am using one now and boy do I want to throw it out the window and get a mac. All it does is crash. Sure Apple costs more, so what? It doesn't crash every 5 min! Oh and another snippet about windows.. go to http://www.againsttcpa.com/index.shtml and you will see why I hate windows even more.

i have few questions b4 buying the shuffle.
the buttons on shuffle, is it clickable, or is it touch sensitive?
does it come with the usb extender?
and how durable is it?
previously someone said you need to sign up for iTunes,, whats that?
Vinnie @ Dec 19th 2005 2:41AM
My roomate bought one online the day of the release on the apple store, I still much prefer my 4G 20G model, but the shuffle does have some pluses, it's lightweight and flash-based, so no moving parts - Most of all, it's a way for him to quit using my iPod, it sounds great, just like the big mama, no playlists, though, buf you can't beat $150 for 1G!
Vinnie @ Dec 19th 2005 2:41AM
People, people, people!
The only reason why I like iTunes over Windows Media, Real, MusicMatch and other programs is that IMHO iTunes is the easiest one to use - I am a geek and I love gadgets, but I don't feel like sitting in front of the computer for four hours setting the other programs up and hoping they work. iTunes+iPod is easy, I buy or rip my music, create a playlist, burn or send to iPod, that's it - The hype factor doesn't really matter to me as my 4G 20G has enough storage for all the songs I could use for a lifetime. Real and MusicMatch kill you to death with system resources/ads and other general B/S. I just want a program that is easy to use and that I don't need to spend a lot of time setting up. Ease of use, there is why Apple has most of the marketshare.
wraith @ Dec 19th 2005 2:41AM
Ok, so, I don't have the time now to read all this but there is one question.
I don't understand this whole itunes stuff, so am I able to get the MP3s I got on my PC on the shuffle?

You said that you're spoiled by Firewire. That USB 2.0 is slower...but...UBS 2.0 is faster than Firewire....it's over the 400 mb/s speed...it technically should be faster...Maybe your computer doesn't have USB 2.0 - only 1...in this case...yes, it would suck.
Chris @ Dec 19th 2005 2:41AM
OK...just read more of the thread and went to this site: http://www.barefeats.com/usb2.html - Too bad....USB 2.0 implementation on the G5 is sucky to the max...whcih in effect sucks. You think I use the work Suck too much?

Just a quick question that has been bugging me: Has anyone found the method of charging the shuffle to be a downside? Is it difficult to do? Do you need your computer on all night? Thanks!

My god, what will Apple think of next? And i'm not saying that ina positive way!! They are really all about money now. This is the most useless thing i have ever seen, and at over $100, anyone with an ipod should not need it. If i need random songs, i turn on my ipod's shuffle mode. I dont need to spend an extra hundred bucks on something to do it for me. And with my ipod, i get 20GB worth of random songs, not only 1GB!!
What will their next idea be? Will it be an ipod that costs 150 bucks and plays only certain playlists that you want? I couldnt come up with anything really, but dont fear, Apple has enough stupid ideas to cover for my lacking!!

apple rules! and ALL iPodians are retards....
apple has made marketing history and i am guessing the way the ipod legion is growing it will continue to do so.
Here in India this indigestible chewing gum is available for between USD 190 and 275!! Chew THAT! Yet there are people willing to buy this from-the-assembly-line-go-directly-to-trashcan overpriced piece of garbage.
Here is what I have:
a)imate pocket pc with a 512mb sd card (card cost me USD 50). Its a cell phone, a handy digital camera, an organiser, gaming centre, email device, music player, video centre, internet access device, wireless modem, blah blah blah...can go on and on...
b) a 20gb samsung napster mp3 player. way better looking and smaller than the iBrick. Online reviews are mixed especially abt running napster. so who cares? use wm instead. have stored abt 2000 songs on it. run it on headphones, pc, Harman Kardon home theatre, boom box etc.All i now need is a good FM transmitter to play it wirelessly on the units mentioned and also over my car stereo. Any ideas? will be great if that transmitter also works with the imate
piyoosh gupta @ Dec 19th 2005 2:41AM
to #216: the next iPod will be called the iJoke. It will cost 200 bucks and everytime you touch it, it will call you a moron in 12 languages and snigger at you all day long.It will also come preloaded with 4000 insults to your IQ and subtle marketing hints to make you buy iSucker which will be the next big Apple iDea. Will keep you posted on what that will be.

Got mine last night and unpacked it right away. This thing is even cooler than I thought. It's very simple to use, and works like it's supposed to. I don't need a screen to tell me what I'm listening to and at 99 bucks it just can't be beat! The sound is just as good as a regular 3g ipod too.
rubecious @ Dec 19th 2005 2:41AM
#112 I would also like the autofill feature for my bigger iPod.
I hope it's going to be a more general feature, I would also like an autofill button in playlists.
Another feature that shuffle has, and reg iPod doesn't is that you can keep the iPod contents in the sources list when it isn't connected.
I think iTunes needs a little update for those ease-of-use-y things.
....
First Apple was small and system was not compatible with Win so it got bashed.
Now it is turning into big Apple and people dislike it for appraching things more economically...
I like how Apple develops itself. I feel they are making an important contribution to contemporary culture with their solutions, their design and also or maybe especially with the way they market and sell.
...
Apple has a great sense of humor, to make the shuffle feature the main selling point.
Apple is like a rapper dissing the competition.
And did you see the iPod socks?
All the third party people made slick high techy rubbery skinsy protections, and Apple just knits socks. ROFL
They must hav so much fun doing their thing.

I always wanted an iPod but the cost, bulk, weight, and fragility and of it stopped me.
i did own a 32 meg Diamond Rio and that sucked.
The Shuffle is what i have been waiting about 8 years for... THANK YOU APPLE.
I personally dislike apple and have actually never owned a single Apple product. i don't know how to use the MACOS but the idea of it being unix based definately turns me on. I am not a gadget freak [anymore..:] but i do spin vinyl constantly and i am 'playing out' more and more.
This product gives me a chance to stick a nice amount of music on my necklace!!! Though i wouldn't want the 1gb version solely due to lack of a screen and SO MANY TRACKS.
The cheaper my unit is the more i think i'd take chances with carrying it everywhere i go!
For the cost and for what this unit has competing with it i don't see why anyone would even consider it a 'scam' or whatever.
Finally i can buy an MP3 player and be happy with it. THANK YOU APPLE...
Raphael @ Dec 19th 2005 2:41AM
Well, i ordered my shuffle on the 31st and i cant wait to get it. I also own a 20 gig new ipod and i love it, but its a bitch to work out with. no case....so i bought an iskin, works out better but now it kinda sticks to my shorts and the clip doesnt move too much so its hard to clip it back into my pocket. i lift big weights and i dropped my ipod i think twice, if it wasnt for the iskin i think i would have damaged it. i also have workout gloves which i cant take off b/c it takes too long. i bought the remote, works great but now the cords too long. this thing is too expensive and to clumsy to lift weights with. so when i saw the suffle i too thought about the screen. but then i said well when i work out i make a playlist titled "WORK OUT MUSIC", and thats all i listen to and i play it at random. This shuffle is light can go around ur neck or ur pocket, or hell buy a strip of velcrow and attatch it to u that way, arm band is not an option to us weight lifters. i tried another brand i think Rio but the buttons are like setting a 5$ digital watch! The shuffle has big buttons good battery life (12hr) and only takes 3 hours to charge(so ive been told)The hell with a screen, just get me too my next track.
To the people who dont think this is a good product, go buy the mini. But for people who want some music to listen too while going to class or people that work out, this is our Ideal player.
Remember when you had to use a discman to work out with and remember when you were just able to burn Cd's, not everyone could.you had to listen to 1 cd and wonder how the hell were you gonna keep this cd player from falling out. Now its like your not even carrying anything on you. 10 outa 10!!!
der lizzard @ Dec 19th 2005 2:41AM
I'm surprised by all the negative comments from people who disagree about others' product choices... in a free society, it's all about choice... I don't see Steve Jobs holding a gun to people's heads making them buy iPods so why so much anger? Why not admit that everyone has a right to choose what is right for oneself and that choice might not be the same as yours? I already own two regular ipods (10gb and 20gb) and find it truly indispensible for travel. When I'm on an airplane for 7 hours, I need my entire music collection with me bc who knows what I'll be in the mood for - maybe Judas Priest, maybe La Traviata. I see the Shuffle as a complementary product - I run, and I wanted a flash-based player for my workouts so that I wouldn't worry about jiggling the hard drive, plus I'm only working out for an hour at a time so I don't need the capacity of the original iPod, plus I'm already lugging around enough weight on my hips that I want as lightweight a player as possible. Obviously I'm not peeking at a screen while working out, so I don't miss that either. In short, I think the Shuffle is a brilliant idea for certain uses; obviously it's not the right product for everyone but it's not trying to be either. So if you don't like it don't buy it, but don't attack others who do. This is still a free country.
baddog @ Dec 19th 2005 2:41AM
Not sure why, but I had to have one. And I have not owned a Walkman type device since the cassette days. With a bit of luck, I walked out of Best Buy with the last green box and a smile. What did I get for a $149? A flimsy plastic stick with a seriously marginal on-off switch. But the Shuffle is absolutely fantastic. Awesome sound and total style, and I love the Sony copied dial control.
Super tiny and light as a feather, just brilliant. One last grip, iTunes locks up my Outlook send email.
I am already thinking, I've got to have a Mac Mini...
Jonathan @ Dec 19th 2005 2:41AM

My 12 year old son just spent his last penny to buy an iPod Shuffle. Much to his horror, the 3-position switch has terrible detents, and he is unable to turn the player off -- it doesn't feel like it clicks into the off position. It's going back to the store tomorrow -- hopefully he just got a fluke.
Does anyone else have a mushy switch on the back? How durable do you think this thing is?
Jon @ Dec 19th 2005 2:41AM

"But it's also only a 100 bucks"
Damn, I wish I was rich enough to say that too...
BTW, here in the UK, Creative's players are the same price as the Shuffle for the same size memory. Except they play for longer. And have a screen so you can choose what you want to listen to, instead of guessing or leaving it to luck. And a radio, in case, well, you know, you want to listen to the radio. Or are Macfans too cool to listen to something as old-fashioned as radio?!
Shuffle is great if you treat your music as white noise, just something you want to have going into your ears in the background. But if you actually love music, you'll be wanting to chose what you listen to, not just leaving it to fate. And to chose, you need a screen.
Hello Creative!

It's small and it doesn't do much other than play music and act as a flash drive.
If you don't like it, don't buy it.
Jobs isn't saying "buy everything that I put out".
I like it because it has a lot of storage for the price, and it's simple, but I don't even think i'm going to buy ones. Gadgets today are trying to do too many things at once.
This sort of simplicity is refreshing.
Cell phones that are pda's, wifi and video cameras. It's a bit too much for one thing. I like things that do one thing, and do it right.
You have to admit, $99 for 512mb and $150 for 1 gig is a pretty good price for even just a flash drive.
It's cheap, it plays music, and if you want more, go elsewhere.
Apple is not God, no one said they were. You don't have to own the whole product line. Buy what you want, not just for sport.

At first i thought that the no screen would be a problem but then i realised that with its 120 songs (instead of the thousands of songs with a normal) Chances were that i would want to listen to them. so it would not matter if i could see or not. if I wanted to find a specific song, then (as i put them on manually in albums, single songs would be between albums) i would know the order of albums and would be able to find it quite easily. if i get bored of the songs then i just put a bunch of different ones on when i get home.
Also does anyone else feel pressured to fill your normal ipod and put a load of rubbish on there that you will never listen to?
Usman @ Dec 19th 2005 2:41AM
